I’m sure that you as a reader by this time are privy to the most recent train derailment that had occurred this past Monday in Portland, OR. So, here’s what sources have gathered thus far in this head scratching tragedy that is still unfolding today. We’ll keep it simple and direct for us all to clearly understand without the bull.
The Amtrak Cascades 501, carrying 86 passengers was on a new segment of the route from Seattle to Portland when it derailed. Amtrak 501, which departed momentarily before 8am local time in WA, was part of a recently developed high-speed service that launched Monday morning. The Cascades service from Seattle to Portland was supposed to be rated for a maximum speed of 70mph for the section where it derailed on a curve. The train was travelling at 80mph a short time before its obstruction. The rapidly moving train killed three people and injured countless of passengers. Also, the derailed train cars crashed into five motor vehicles and two semi-trucks on the highway Interstate 5.
My initial thoughts were that the tracks had played a significant role in this major error for a scenic travel. During my research on this matter, low-and-behold, the tracks had undergone millions of dollars of improvements and weeks of testing. What form of improvements and testing is found to be unknown at this time. So far as we know, and more importantly, a device called Positive Train Control, a tech that is an automatic system where its function is to slow down and prevents a high-speed train wasn’t activated. National Transportation Safety Board member Bella Dinh-Zarr states that “we have recommended PTC for decades. Unfortunately, the deadline was moved further into the future.” It’s unfortunate to have knowledge of the fact on how this device meant to save lives seemed to be unimportant to initiate by the powers that be, but supposedly millions of dollars was put to use in improving the train tracks prior to its new route of travel. Another error that I’ve discovered was that the emergency doors on the train were not functioning appropriately after the derailment. According to a collective analysis, passengers had to kick out train windows to exit, which I find to be absolutely ridiculous as well.
All of crew members are hospitalized, but The National Transportation Safety Board are assigning interviews for more detailed information in regards to this catastrophe. Well, it doesn’t take Ray Charles to see where the error lies in this conquest. I think it’s quite ignorant for such disasters to occur before changes are made. Well, I’ll be keeping up with the most recent findings to conclude who will get to play the scapegoat this time. Peace.
